Language on the Canoe
The core idea behind “Language on the Canoes” is to look beyond the images we typically associate with Canoe Journey — beautiful canoes traveling across the water, paddlers moving in unison, and the connection to our ancestral waters.
While those images are an important part of the journey, this story explores what happens around the canoes and behind the scenes.
The video highlights the Lushootseed language revitalization work taking place throughout Canoe Journey 2026, showing how language is brought into the camps, activities, gatherings, and everyday interactions among families and community members.
Inspired by Jerry Jones’ words, “The language belongs on the canoe,” the video explores what it means to put those words into action.
From greetings, storytelling, prayer, song, dance, crafting, weaving, and activities with children, Lushootseed becomes part of the journey — not simply something being taught, but something being used, shared, and carried forward.
The video will also reveal the often-unseen side of Canoe Journey: the people who make the journey possible once the canoes reach shore. Camps transform into temporary communities, with teams working together to provide food, shelter, activities, and support for the canoe families.
Through cinematic imagery, natural sound, and behind-the-scenes footage, “Language on the Canoes” will tell a story of community, culture, and language revitalization.
Ultimately, this story is about more than the journey of the canoes.
It is about the journey of the language — and the people carrying it forward.
